Watercolor painting of pineapple lilies by Catherine M. James

Pineapple Lilies | 18x24"

$1,650.00Price

These bold and beautiful plants are a genus known as eucomis. Completely unrelated to the pineapple, they are called pineapple lilies because the round cluster of flowers with a tuft of leaves at the top resembles a pineapple. These pineapple lilies are from my garden. Every detail of these plants is stunning - including the star-shaped blossoms that open from the bottom up, the glowing green-yellow stamens at the center of each flower, and the gorgeous deep purple-red flower stalks.

I had some fun with metallic gold watercolor in the background of this painting. It gives the work a historical quality and adds to the dark botanical drama. The little hidden frog is also metallic gold and he catches the light as you move around the painting.

This original watercolor was done on paper stretched over a wrapped canvas. The painting continues around the four sides and is sealed with cold wax medium. No frame or glass is needed.
